Shannon Barry is a senior teacher from Melbourne and director of Grass Roots Yoga St Kilda & Mornington and The Mindful Yoga Academy.
A hot yogi at heart, it was a class he attended over 15 years ago that ignited his passion for yoga like nothing else had before. It wasn’t long before he was off to study in Canada with Moksha Yoga in Toronto, which are widely known as the ‘mindful’ hot yoga method in North America.
After completing his first 500 hours of study he was keen to teach and at that time was living in Doha, Qatar (Middle East). Armed with fresh orders from Moksha Yoga directors Ted Grand and Jessica Robertson to ‘spread peace to the Middle East’, he was off teaching classes pretty much as soon as he arrived back. It was here that the idea for Grass Roots Yoga was born as an offering for yoga at any level and to any one regardless of age, creed and religion.
That was 10 years ago and since this time he has grown a multi studio network and founded the Mindful Yoga Teacher Training academy.
Shannon’s first real intersection and introduction to yin yoga was in Melbourne when he hosted Sarah & Ty Powers at Grass Roots Yoga some 5 years ago. This journey of yin yoga and education led him Bordeaux, France and Sydney, Australia to study with Sarah & Ty as well as attending their silent retreats in Thailand through the years. The thirst for an anatomical approach to yin yoga has taken Shannon to the USA to study with yin yoga creator Paul Grilley, and study with Jo Phee in Melbourne where he has hosted her twice.
